National Night Out gets a COVID-19 safe twist this year

Join the fun by staying home and showing support for local law enforcement

VICTORIA, Texas- Victoria Police Department announces National Night Out happening on October 6th.

Each year, cities across the country come out to celebrate and strengthen relationships between law enforcement and the community. Victoria is one of the many cities that actively participates with neighborhood and other community events.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, VPD is modifying the event to participate by having a National Night In. They will be doing an emergency vehicle parade for the first five neighborhoods that register with VPD. Senior Police Officer/Crime Prevention Specialist, John Turner, said, “I know the COVID parades have become quite popular nowadays and figured, well, that’s probably the only way we’re going to be able to reach out to the community because we could probably safely go to parties and stuff, but you know, why risk it?”

Officer Turner responded to the tensions seen around the country between communities and law enforcement; his hope is that this event will create a positive interaction with our community.

“People are just inundated with is negative news. But they’re attaching that national narrative to the local scene. And it’s just not necessarily that way here. We’re constantly trying to find ways to interact with the public on a positive note. And I’ve said it before this is a negative contact business, 99% of the time when you’re talking to a police officer, it’s under some negative circumstances you’ve been pulled over or you’re the victim of a crime or heaven forbid you’ve committed a crime. So we need to come up with different ideas and different opportunities for us to engage with the public under more positive circumstances. This is just one of them,” said Officer Turner.

You can participate and show your support by simply turning on your front porch light or replacing the bulb with a blue one. Those who want to go a bit further may decorate their yards with National Night Out themed decorations, or their driveways with some creative chalk art.

On October 6th, between 5:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m., first responders will be out in the community with an emergency vehicle parade. To register your neighborhood for the parade, contact the Victoria Police Department Community Engagement Unit at 361-485-3811 or

In addition to the parade, a National Night Out banner and blue lightbulbs will be provided to the registered neighborhoods.
