Military Hero of the Month: John Davis

VICTORIA, Texas- Cynthia Davis is the proud wife of a 20 plus year army veteran, John Davis. This month she nominated her husband as Military Hero of the month. John Davis says that to this day, the military has helped shape the person he is today.

“I would think that one of the biggest things the military kind of taught me, believe it or not, is just a kind of respect to everyone else,” Davis explains.

From Texas, to Germany, to Italy and the Middle East, John Davis grew through the ranks in a job that felt less like work and more like an adventure.

“[All] while I was able to learn a lot of unique traits that I probably wouldn’t have the opportunity to do in any other unit. Jumping out of planes, airborne school, aerosol, Morse Code, sniper school, [I was] deployed all over the world. I always joke that I went on a 21-22 year camping trip, and I had an absolute blast doing it,” explains Davis with a smile on his face.

He is the first to recognized that a military lifestyle takes a partnership, thanking military spouses like his own for allowing him to be successful.

“First off, thanks to the spouses, know that it’s not overlooked,”adds Davis as he looks to his wife, Cynthia.

Cynthia however, was quick to return the praise, she explains, “he does so much and he doesn’t even notice or realize what he does, and probably  thinks he doesn’t do anything, so after 20 years [of marriage] you got to get creative and say, ‘How else can I show him?’”

John Davis is now a teacher, yet his hope continues to be the same- make an impact on those around him.

“I didn’t know what I  wanted to do [after the army]. Teaching just kind of fell into my lap, and I thoroughly enjoy it. In a kind of a weird way, it does remind me of being in the army, because now I’m in charge of shaping a bunch of young minds,” he concludes.
