Meet the librarian spreading the magic of Christmas
VICTORIA, Texas — The Calhoun County Library’s Children’s Program is more than just a job to Children’s Librarian, Kelley Ashley, it’s a passion.
Parents from around the Crossroads take their toddlers to story time every Wednesday with Kelley where they sing, read stories, and make arts and crafts. On December 11 th they made ornaments to hang on their Christmas trees at home.
Kelley tells us the best part of her job is watching the kids who are regulars in the program, progress through their pre-school years.
She mentions that, “Some of [the children] were two when I started here, and they’re already in school. So it’s kinda neat to see them learn and grow, and then go off to school.”
Inspiring Ms. Kelley along the way were the memories of growing up right here in the Crossroads. Sheridan, a few miles northwest of Hallettsville, is where Kelley went to school.
We had to know though what her favorite hometown Christmas event was growing up.
She tells us it was, “Definitely the lighting of the courthouse in Hallettsville. That was always fun. We would go, everybody would load up and stand around in the square and wait for the lights to come on. That was always fun. It was like a family thing when we were growing up.”
The magic of Christmas is what Kelley tries to share with families at the Port Lavaca library. Because like many of us know, the most joyful elves are children, and the holidays are traditionally when we get to spend the most time with those we hold dear.
Kelley reminisced about her childhood saying, “In the living room, in front of the fireplace, we just lay out blankets on the floor and everybody just spent the night, because we were all from all over Texas. So everybody kinda came back there and had Christmas, and it was fun. We had a good time growing up. We always had a Christmas Show at the Baptist Church there in Sheridan. My mom helped get everybody prepared for it, so we were always practicing after school and stuff.”
Ms. Kelley will be joining Ozzy and James on the Crossroads Today Christmas Special, and sharing a little more holiday cheer while they make their own special ornaments. Tune in Christmas night at 10 p.m. to check it out.
