Mayor McCoy expresses a desire to “get our community back on track” in State of the City address
Racial injustice, impact of COVID-19, and property taxes among topics discussed
VICTORIA, Texas—-The Victoria Chamber of Commerce held its monthly luncheon and Mayor Rawley McCoy addressed The State of the City.
“It’s incumbent upon all of us to come together like never before and get our community back on track,” says Rawley McCoy, the City of Victoria Mayor.
The Mayor spoke about several things that would help get our community back on track. A few things were bringing the community together against racial injustices, road fixtures, how COVID-19 has impacted our community and property taxes.
“It just came to my attention a few weeks ago when we saw the approved appraisals come in and it kind of jumped out at me and the judge as well. We’ve talked about it and the judge and I intend to delve further into it to try to get an understanding of what happened,” said, Mayor McCoy.
The Mayor says he noticed the commercial appraisals values have dropped but the residential values have gone up. His goal is to see why the home appraisals are increasing and how he can help get them reduced. He’s also started the process to beautify Victoria.
“The way our city looks is a reflection of who we are. How can we expect people to be happy to live here number one unless we have a beautiful city to live in and number two why would you expect anybody to come here?”
Mayor McCoy said he’s having a meeting on Thursday with the University of Houston Victoria Diversity and Race Task Force team to see how they can create a safe space to speak about racial injustices. He hopes community leaders have taken very important key elements from this meeting.
“Well, I hope they can see how it all goes together with that you can’t have one without the other and be successful. We live in a complete society and we need everyone to participate,” said, Mayor McCoy.
Mayor McCoy also says that COVID-19 has challenged our community but it will not defeat us or detour our community.
