Matagorda County Sheriff’s Office releases racial profiling report
In an effort to build trust between law enforcement and the community, the 77th Legislature began requiring law enforcement agencies to submit annual racial profiling reports.
Recently the Matagorda County Sheriff’s Office released their racial profiling report.
The report shows a total of 1,297 traffic stops made in 2016.
Out of those 1297 stops, 647 were Caucasian, 478 were Hispanic, and 119 were African-Americans. In 2015 only 623 traffic stops were made in Matagorda County, and the number of traffic stops made this year compared to last year has doubled.
According to Sgt. James Orr, the number of traffic stops have doubled since last year because the number of deputies patrolling the streets have increased.
