Major Boxing Amateur Event In Victoria Saturday

Local Boxer To Face Floyd Mayweather Boxer

One of the biggest amateur boxing events to ever hit Victoria comes here Saturday night.
Heart Of A Champion Boxing Club Of Victoria, hosting the Frank Torres Invitational, named for the long-time main man in Victoria amateur boxing.
Teams from all over Texas are coming, including Jessie James Leija’s gym in San Antonio, and even one of Floyd Mayweather’s amateur fighters from Las Vegas.
Jesus Ventura, South Texas regional Golden Glove champ from Heart Of A Champion, taking on Gulf Coast regional Gold Glove champ Eugene Hill in the main event. The co-main event, Heart Of A Champion’s Xavier Soliz, 125 pound regional champ, facing last year’s regional champ, Eleazar Mendietta. I talked with some of the key people from Heart Of A Champion.

Said Frank Torres Invitational Administrator Debra Perez, “It’s exciting but it’s also a little unnerving. I know they are used to a lot more than Victoria and the small sanction of 20 fights, where there’s normally 25.”

Said Ventura, “Shoot, I’ve been training for at least three months just getting ready for this event. We were getting ready for another event before but things didn’t turn out the way we wanted to. Now we just have to get ready for this one.”

Said Soliz, “Oh man it’s been crazy training. Every morning I run. Then I come here and bust my you know. Just keep on training hard.”

Heart Of A Champion boxing club hosts the Frank Torres Invitational Saturday night at 7:00 at the Community Center Arena.
