Athlete of the Week: April 26-30

West track runner named Athlete of the Week

VICTORIA, Texas–Our Athlete of the Week this week is West Warriors track runner, Connor Williams.

Williams is the only Warriors track and field athlete heading to the state meet next week. Williams runs the 400 meter race. He ran a 49.96 in the prelims for regionals and is looking to go faster than that and hopefully gets a time of .48 seconds. His freshman year, Williams got hurt and last season was cut short due to COVID-19 so this state meet will be the first time he is making the trip to Austin.

“I’m really just looking forward to embracing the opportunity. Of course being at a big track like UT, I’ve never been to that track so that should be fun. Getting to run against all these really fast guys, it should be great,” said Williams.

At the regionals, Williams came second to another runner who will compete alongside Williams at state. Williams is looking forward to getting a faster time than him and beating him this time around. Williams was picked to run in the 400 by West Warriors track & field head coach Trey Aley, and was kept in the 400 after a great performance.

“Just throughout practices we see whose handling the distances. We’ll run 200s 300s and 500s and we see guys who can handle the distance. He was good enough to run the 200 good enough to run the 100 but he was strong enough and be able to compete and finish in the 400 so that was the race I thought that he would be be most successful at,” said Aley.

Williams enjoys the relay races because he loves having the support from his teammates. He is working solo now on the track and is finding ways to keep his drive as he prepares for the state meet.

“Going that like 120 percent at practice and especially being by myself I don’t realy have another driving factor so I have to go and give it all I can. I raced the mule yesterday, the John Deer thing so that was fun having some competition at practice,” said Williams.

Williams will have his race next Friday in at Mike A. Meyers Stadium at 7 p.m. Congratulations Connor Williams on being named this weeks Athlete of the Week.
