Locals Express Expectations for Democratic Debate
VICTORIA, Texas — The first single night debate as only 10 candidates met the Democratic National Committee criteria.
The opening topic, you guess it; universal healthcare. A coined term for many democrats, from Obamacare to Medicaid for all, candidates reflected what majority of polls are saying- they’d rather expand “Affordable Care Act” than having Medicaid for all.
The fire was evident as gun control came up. Being in the state who recently saw the direct hit of 2 mass shootings, native Texan, Beto O’Rourke said he wants assault style rifles out of civilian hands.
Local Victoria democrat Jeanne Trombly, made her way to Houston to attend the debate, her trip there was driven by her need of clarification. She says,”I’m hoping to get clarification on where they stand. I want some specifics on how they are going to do what they’re saying they are doing to do and feel if their character meets those expectations.”
As elections inch closer– Victoria Republicans are also on the lookout.
“For me what would perk my ear, is what they plan on doing long term with our judicial system, the court has been completely changed under trump, this is our way as conservatives to generally know where they stand what they want and how they want to do it, and it’s our job to listen.” says Andrew Rokovich, Chairman of the Victoria County Young Republicans.
The fourth democratic debate is set for October 15th- with an October 1st deadline for candidate qualification.
