Local boxers impacted by cancellations
State Golden Gloves in Fort Worth canceled amid pandemic
VICTORIA, Texas — Like athletes throughout the world, local boxers have had to regroup following schedule cancellations amid the COVID-19 outbreak.
State Golden Gloves, set to begin Tuesday in Fort Worth, were cancelled earlier this month as a precautionary measure during the pandemic. Victoria’s Tuff-E-Nuff Boxing Club had planned to send five boxers to the event- brothers David, Joe Angel, and Julian Martinez in addition to Jermaine White and Ramon Acosta.
“I’ve got three kids,” said David Martinez, 27. “And the training and work, I only get an hour out of the day to spend with them, you know. For them to just take it away from me like that, it beats that work ethic.”
Officially, all USA Boxing events have been cancelled through at least Mid-April.
