Local boutique adapting to pandemic landscape

VICTORIA, Texas — Victoria gift shop and boutique Days Gone Bye! is one of countless small businesses in the Golden Crescent severely impacted by strict regulations imposed due to COVID-19. Owner Pat McDonald says while the store, located on Moody St. in downtown Victoria, has officially reopened nearly two months without foot traffic forced the business to adapt.

“You have to decide what you’re gonna do to get your merchandise out to the customer — and the customer cannot come in — so you have to reinvent yourself,” said McDonald on Wednesday.

In the case of Days Gone Bye! that meant offering gift bags and boxes for curbside pickup and shipping merchandise, whenever possible, all around the country.

“We did as much as we could,” said McDonald. “I call it keeping our head above water.”

The store’s staff is offering complementary masks and hand sanitizer to every customer who enters the store, while observing all of the state’s occupancy regulations. But McDonald believes their fate may ultimately lie in the community’s willingness to start shopping once again.

“There are a lot of us in Victoria that need you to get out and help them, and help them stay open,” added McDonald. “And we’ll know about three months from now how that’s gonna work for everybody.”

Days Gone Bye! has updated hours, Monday through Friday from 1-5 pm, and Saturday from 1-4 pm.
