Local athletes return from competition in Australia
VICTORIA, Texas — Three local athletes got a chance to put their talents to the test down under this summer.
Cuero’s Will Green, Refugio’s Izac Canchola, and recent West graduate Mariana Velasquez all participated at Down Under Sports in Brisbane this July, competing against some of the nation’s best while exploring another corner of the world. Green competed at the cross country games, while Canchola and Velasquez went for track and field.
“It was just a great experience being able to do that with other people who were also going there for the first time,” Velasquez said on Friday.
Green echoed the sentiment, adding it was uncanny performing such a familiar task in a place so far from home.
“I’m usually used to running on the beach at home in Port Aransas,” he said. “But there in Australia, trying to picture where I was again, I had to keep reminding myself that I was in a new country.”
Green ran in the 5k and 5.7k events, finishing 51st out of 2034 total runners in the latter. Velasquez ran in the 100 open, 200 open, and 4×100 relay. Her team won gold in the relays.
