Lady Flyers Prepare for Powerhouse Goliad

The Lady Flyers’ first home game of 2018 won’t be an easy one.

St. Joseph’s varsity volleyball team, preparing for Tuesday evening’s home opener against perennial powerhouse Goliad. The Tigers are ranked fourth overall in State 3A, Division I, setting the stage for a challenging evening for first year head coach Summer Brooks and her team. Despite the difficult matchup, the Lady Flyers aren’t planning on backing down.

“When we play a harder team like that we tend to have more energy on the court,” said St. Joe’s Sarah Rosas. “We just come together more as a team, and we definitely put balls away faster. We just play at our best.”

Her team is coming off some solid play, defeating Holy Cross on the road in San Antonio last Saturday. But junior Savannah Wharton says there’s always a little added energy when they face a program like Goliad’s.

“I don’t know, it’s just something about playing Goliad that makes us work harder,” Wharton said Monday. “We’ve played them I think twice now, and this is going to be our third time. And it’s our first home game so we’re very excited.”

After going nearly a month without a home contest, the Lady Flyers will play two this week. Following tomorrow’s match with the Tigers, they’ll host Shiner St. Paul at the St. Joe’s Dome on Thursday evening.

Start time for the match against Goliad is set for 7 pm.
