Patrolman Benys dies from gunshot wounds

KINGSVILLE, Texas – On Thursday, Nov. 4 at approximately 5:15 a.m., Kingsville Police Department announced the death of Senior Patrolman Sherman Otto Benys Jr. Benys died during the early morning hours at Christus Spohn Memorial Shoreline from a gunshot wound.

Senior Patrolman Benys received the gunshot wound in the line of duty while responding to an incident in the 300 block of South Wanda on Monday, Nov. 1. An investigation of the incident continues. Kingsville Police Department anticipates a completion date in the upcoming weeks.

Chief Ricardo Torres, the officers and staff of the Kingsville Police Department and family members of Patrolman Benys have been overwhelmed by support of their law enforcement brothers and sisters. The citizens of the region also have provided their prayers, blood and monetary donations.
