MARSHALL – Garrett Harrison (SR/Victoria, TX), Caleb Soda and Maxwell Sheldon (SR/Houston, TX) each drove in two runs in the nightcap Saturday to help the University of Houston-Victoria Jaguars split a Red River athletic Conference doubleheader with the Wiley College Wildcats.
The Wildcats (9-9, 2-4 RRAC) scored six unearned runs in the second inning to capture the opener 9-2. The Jaguars (3-10, 2-4) then scored in five of the final six innings for a 9-4 victory in the nightcap.
The Jaguars made three errors in the second inning of the opener leading to six runs that the Jaguars were unable to overcome.
The Jaguars scored both of their runs in the ninth when Zechariah Vela (JR/Victoria, TX) ground to short with the bases loaded scoring Hayden Leopold (FR/Columbus, TX) from third. Langston White (FR/Seabrook, TX) then raced home on the overthrow to home.
Vargas sparked the Jaguars early in the nightcap with a two-out solo home run in the first for a 1-0 lead.
After the Wildcats tied the game in the third, the Jaguars took the lead for good with a pair of fourth inning runs. Two Wiley errors and a sacrifice fly by Zoda led to both runs.
Sheldon and Vela singled home runs in the sixth and Zoda used another sacrifice fly in the seventh to give the Jaguars a 6-1 lead.
Leopold’s RBI double in the eighth stretched the lead to 7-1, before the Wildcats fought back with three runs in the bottom of the eighth to cut the lead to 7-4.
Harris got two of the runs back in the ninth for the Jaguars with a two-run single.
Christian Garcia (SO/Baytown, TX) worked seven innings allowing one run on four hits and four walks with five strikeouts to earn the win.
