Jaguars fall to St. Edwards, drop ninth straight
VICTORIA, Texas — The St. Edward’s Hilltoppers used three runs in the closing innings Tuesday to edge past the University of Houston-Victoria Jaguars 7-6 at Riverside Stadium.
The loss extended the Jaguars losing streak to nine games as they fell to 16-25, while the Hilltoppers improved to 17-23.
The Hilltoppers tied the game at 6-6 with a two-run seventh behind a two-run double from Jacob Vasquez.
Ty Markee’s one-out triple in the eighth proved to be the clincher when pinch-hitter Chase Fontana followed with a double to give the Hilltoppers the lead.
Ryan McPail homered on the second pitch of the game to highlight a two-run first for the Hilltoppers, but the Jaguars began chipping away in the second.
Derek Smith (SO/Richmond, TX) drew a one-out walk and moved to third on a single by Caleb Zoda (JR/Frisco, TX). Nathaniel Edison (SO/Goliad, TX) followed with a sacrifice fly to cut the lead to 2-1.
Maxwell Sheldon (JR/Houston, TX) opened the bottom of the third with his first home run of the season, a solo shot to left. Chase Tamez (SR/Cypress, TX) and Garrett Harrison (JR/Victoria, TX) followed with back-to-back singles, with Tamez scoring when the Hilltoppers misplayed Harrison’s base hit. Joshua Fonseca (SR/Pasadena, TX) then doubled Harrison home for a 5-2 advantage.
The Hilltoppers would answer with a pair of runs in the fourth, but Fonseca’s leadoff home in the fifth, his 11th of the season, put the Jaguars back up 6-4.
Collin Quinn (JR/El Campo, TX) took the loss working the final two innings allowing one run on two hits and a walk.
The Jaguars return to action Friday and Saturday when they face off against Texas A&M-Texarkana in a Red River Athletic Conference triple hitter in Texarkana.
