UHV baseball drops to 1-3 on the season
VICTORIA, Texas — The Mid-America Christian Evangels banged out 14 extra base hits Saturday and out hit the University of Houston-Victoria Jaguars 31-29 to capture a sweep of a doubleheader at Riverside Stadium.
The Evangels used a 13-run fourth inning to capture the opening game with a 19-10 victory and then rallied with a pair of runs in each of the last three innings to take the nightcap 9-7.
After the Evangels jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning of the opener, the Jaguars (1-4) came right back to cut the lead to 3-2 in the third. Luis Vargas (SR/Barquisimeto, Lara, Venezuela) drove home Langston White (FR/Seabrook, TX) with a double and Garrett Harrison (SR/Victoria, TX) followed with another double to plate Vargas.
But the bottom fell out in the top of the fourth as the Evangels erupted for 13 runs for a 16-2 lead.
The Jaguars got four back in the bottom of the inning behind an RBI double from Jose Jimenez Antonio (FR/Veracruz, Mexico) and RBI singles by White and Harrison. The Jaguars also scored a run on a passed ball.
The Evangels (6-2) added three more in the fifth, while the Jaguars closed out the game with a three-run sixth and a solo run in the seventh.
Harrison, Antonio and Amilcar Montanez (JR/Arroyo, Puerto Rico) each had two hits in the contest, while Vargas and Harrison each had two RBI.
The Evangels jump out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first of the nightcap, but the Jaguars struck right back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning. Vargas drove in one run with a sacrifice fly and Maxwell Shelton drove in another run with an infield single.
MACU answer right back with a pair of runs, but the Jaguars shot right back with four for a 6-2 advantage after two innings.
Harrison started the uprising with a two-run single to center and Henry would follow a batter later with another two-run single, this time to left.
The Jaguars held the lead until the seventh when the Evangels tied the game with a pair of runs and then added a pair in the eighth and nine to capture the nightcap.
The Jaguars continued to fight as Sheldon opened the ninth with a single, before Caleb Zoda (SR/Frisco, TX) drove home pinch runner Hayden Leopold (FR/Columbus, TX) with a double to deep left-center. John Nelson (FR/Austin, TX) then singled with one out to put runners at first and third.
But after White struck out, Vargas was robbed on a deep short to center field which the MACU made on over the should catch to end the game.
Zoda went 4-for-4 in the game for the Jaguars, while Vargas, Harrison, Sheldon, Henry, Montanez and Nelson each had two hits.
The Jaguars will be back in action on Thursday at Southwestern Assemblies of God for a noon doubleheader.
