Jaguars clinch RRAC regular season title

The 16th-ranked University of Houston-Victoria Jaguars clinched the Red River Athletic Conference regular season softball title Friday with a doubleheader sweep over the Texas College Steers.

The Jaguars snapped a five-game losing streak with an 18-1 five-inning, run-rule victory in the opening game, and then took a 10-2 win in the nightcap. The two teams wrap up the series Saturday with a single game at noon.

The Jaguars improve to 29-8 on the year and 17-3 in conference, while Texas College falls to 0-26 overall and 0-20 in conference. UHV will be the No. 1 seed in next week’s RRAC Softball Championships tournament.

Marisa Mendoza (JR/Houston, TX), Michelle Revels (SR/Corpus Christi, TX), Jamison Dumont (SR/Pleasanton, TX), Abigail Torres (FR/Bay City), Ashley Reyna (SO/Harlingen, TX) and Angelica Davidson (JR/Portland, TX) each had two RBI in the opening game. Dumont also led the way going 3-for-3 at the plate with two doubles. Torres, Davidson and Carmen Spring (JR/Riverside, CA) each had two hits.

UHV jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first, added seven more in the second and five more in the third.

The steers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second in Game 2 but the Jaguars would use a five-run fifth inning to take the lead for good at 6-2. The Jaguars would finish the game off with a four-run seventh.

Lauren Caka (FR/Yoakum, TX) and Alexis Zarate (FR/Pearland, TX) each drove in two runs in the game, while Jackie Longoria (SO/Edinburg, TX) went 3-for-4. Spring and Revels also each collected two hits for the Jaguars.

Kelsey Tidrick (JR/Port Lavaca, TX) collected the win in the circle in the opening game, while Longoria got the win in Game 2.
