Jaguars clinch No. 2 seed for RRAC tournament with win

University of Houston-Victoria senior Aubri Hockenbury (SR/Santa Fe, TX) tied the Jaguars single-season home run record and helped the Jaguars clinch the No. 2 seed in the Red River Athletic Conference Championships with a doubleheader split against the Our Lady of the Lake Saints on Friday at the Victoria Youth Sports complex.

Hockenbury belted her 15 home run of the season to tie the UHV individual single-season home run record set in 2013 by Marley Moehrig. Unfortunately the home run came in a losing cause in Game 1 with the Saints claiming a 6-3 victory. The Jaguars came back to bang out 17 hits to capture the nightcap with an 11-3 victory in a game called in the sixth inning due to the run rule.

The Jaguars improve to 29-17 on the year and 20-6 in conference, while the Saints fall to 22-18, 14-10 in conference. The two teams return Saturday for a 2 p.m. doubleheader at the Youth Sports Complex.

The Saints took advantage of three UHV errors in the opener to score four unearned runs en route to the victory.

Jana Arena put the Saints up 1-0 in the second with an RBI double, before the Saints erupted for four runs in the fourth. Three of the four runs were unearned.

Hockenbury gave the Jaguars a spark in the bottom of the fourth when she led off with a solo home run to center. The Jaguars then went on to load the bases with one out on singles by Haley Beam (SR/Pearland, Texas), Kathryn Wright (SR/Lindale, TX) and Torey Dumont (SO/Pleasanton, TX). But the Jaguars were unable to score.

The Saints would add another unearned run in the fifth, before the Jaguars would strike back with two more in the bottom of the inning.

Gabby Davila (SO/Houston, TX) and Hockenbury would draw one out walks and after Beam put down a sacrifice bunt, Emily Flores (FR/Houston, TX) doubled both runners home.

All nine starters had at least one hit in Game 2 as the Jaguars struck early and late to claim the victory.

UHV batted around in the first to grab a 5-1 lead and never looked back. Flores and Wright had back-to-back RBI singles and Dumont and Madeline Herrera (JR/Baytown, Texas) followed with back-to-back RBI doubles to highlight the inning.

Hockenbury’s RBI double in the second increase the lead to 6-1 before the Saints struck for a pair of runs in the third to cut the lead to 6-3.

The Jaguars would then end the game with one out in the sixth on an RBI single by Dumont that sparked a second five-run inning.

Jamie Macek (FR/Boling, TX) opened the inning with a bunt single and Davila followed with a single to center. Michelle Revels (SO/Corpus Christi, TX) would beat out another bunt single to load the bases, before Macek raced home on Hockenbury’s sacrifice fly to deep center.

Four straight singles by Beam, Flores, Wright and Dumont would be all the Jaguars would need from that point.

Revels went the distance to claim the win as she allowed three runs on six hits and five walks, while striking out three over six innings.
