Hilltoppers roll past Jaguars
Scoring early and often, the St. Edward’s Hilltoppers downed the University of Houston-Victoria Jaguars 14-5 on Tuesday night at Riverside Stadium.
The Hilltoppers (8-4) did most of their damage in the first six innings, scoring in every frame en route to the win. The Jaguars fell to 2-2 with the loss.
Scoring two solo runs in the first two innings and three more times in the third the Hilltoppers opened up a 5-0 lead before the Jaguars managed to get on the board in the third.
Behind a two-out rally the Jaguars cut the margin to 5-2 behind an RBI double from Chase Tamez (SO/Cypress, TX) that plated Grant Westmoreland and a wild pitch that brought Andrew Gross (SR/Alvin, TX) home.
The Hilltoppers answered back with a solo run in the fourth and four in the fifth for a 10-2 lead.
Gross answered back in the fifth with a huge two-run blast to left-center that also scored Nathaniel Pena (FR/Angleton, TX) who had reached on an error. It was Gross’ third home run in four games.
The Hilltoppers would come right back with three runs in the sixth and the Jaguars would finish off their scoring with a solo run in the bottom of the inning. Gross brought home his third run of the game when he was hit by a pitch to score Collin Schaaf (JR/Needville, TX) who had doubled down the leftfield line.
Gable Whitacre and Hunter Courson paced the Hilltoppers going 3-for-4 with four and three RBIs respectively.
Ross Bludau (JR/Schulenburg, TX) was tagged with the loss for the Jaguars after allowing three runs on six hits and two walks, with four strikeouts over three innings.
The Jaguars will be back in action on Tuesday when they host the St. Mary’s Rattlers in a 2 p.m. contest at Riverside Stadium.
