Here are a few safety tips on how to avoid crashes with 18-wheelers
VICTORIA, Texas—– TxDOT would like to warn the community to drive safe and take extra precaution while driving around 18-wheeler trucks.
TxDOT says thousands of large trucks travel the highways driving about 65 miles per hour but it can take the length of a football field to stop and avoid a deadly crash. Here are a few tips to keep you and your family safe while driving near 18-wheelers.
“I think it’s very important that people know to pass trucks safely by waiting until you can see both truck headlights in your rear view mirror, before moving back into your lane and that it’s very important that you see those headlights. The second one would be to stay away from trucks no zone, they’re blind spots. These are big trucks and they do have blind spots so staying out of them can keep you safe,” said Lucean Kuykendall, TxDOT – Yoakum District.
TxDOT also says don’t squeeze in between a truck and the curb. 18-Wheelers make wide right turns and the driver may not be able to see you. This could potentially cause a deadly crash.
