H.S. Softball News & Generals Get Ready For Season Opener
Cuero softball still needs just two wins to make it to state for the first time. The Lady Gobblers are no-hit by Saleen Flores of Beeville, as the Trojans take game one of their 4A Regional finals, 4-0, Thursday night at St. Mary’s University in San Antonio. Cuero must sweep two games now to get to state. Game two Saturday night at 7:00 at Texas Lutheran in Seguin, with game three, if needed, 30 minutes after game two.
Shiner softball’s season is over. The Lady Comanches, losing 7-1 to Normagee in a one-game 2A Regional final in La Grange.
Big honor for a St. Joe softball player. Emily Llanes, named TAPPS first team 5A All-State. Llanes, the Lady Flyers top pitcher this season, was also a first team All-District selection this season, and Llanes received the St. Joe Beth Smith Outstanding Softball Player award earlier this week. St. Joe’s Mariah Morris got All-State honorable mention.

The generals who have reported got the workout in at Riverside. There are several Generals still with their college teams playing in either conference or national tournaments. I talked with two Generals and Michael Oros, back for his fourth year as Generals head coach. Said coach Oros, “It’s a little bit different this year with overcoming Harvey, still having the remnants left in Victoria as well as my hometown of Kingwood, just north or Houston.” Said outfielder Mike Williams, “It’s exciting, a new experience. I’m looking forward to playing here in front of fans almost every day and playing in other stadiums around Texas.” Said pitcher Evan Maize, “It’s definitely hotter than I’m used to but I like it. It’s beautiful around here. People are real nice. My host family is really cool and I like my teammates.”
The Generals start season number ten Friday night when they visit the Texas Marshals.Charlie Morton remained unbeaten this season with six solid innings, Alex Bregman and Jake Marisnick hit three-run homers and the Houston Astros defeated the Cleveland Indians 8-2 on Thursday night.
