Previews For East & West Girls, STJ Boys & Girls, Faith Boys
Local high school basketball playoffs start up Tuesday night.
West basketball, making a second half district run to grab the fourth and final playoff spot at 9-7. I asked two Warrior girls how much confidence do they have going into the playoffs.
Said post Aliza Scott, “A lot of confidence. I feel we have this. As long as we play together, keep our heads straight and do the things we have to do, we got it. ”
Said wing Ashley Giesalhart, “A lot. We’re just practicing hard every day trying to work on things we need to get better with. If we just get those little things right we’ll be even better than we are.”
East girls basketball starts the playoffs also Tuesday night in Woodsboro. The titans, taking third place in district at 13-3, while going 7-1 in the second half of district. Two East girls told me how much confidence they have going into the playoffs.
Said wing Zakari Perry, “We’re very confident. We’ve been working hard in practice and we know what we’re supposed to do. ”
Said post Leilani Wimbish-Gay, “We have a lot of confidence. We’ve been doing great things the past four practices. I just really have high hopes for us on tomorrow. ”
VISD girls basketball starts the playoffs in a doubleheader at Woodsboro High School Tuesday night.
The West girls lead off the doubleheader at 6:00 against Flour Bluff.
Then the East girls, making the playoffs for the tenth straight season, face Tuloso-Midway in bi-district at 8:00.
St. Joe girls basketball starts the playoffs Tuesday night at home. The Lady Flyers took second place in district, and they are ranked fifth in the Texas Association Of Basketball Coaches state private school 5A poll. I asked two St. Joe girls how much confidence they have going into the playoffs.
Said post/guard Maiya Tillman, “All of us and the coaches, we have a lot of confidence. We’re going in at a really good place together as a team and we’ll do good. ”
Said post Jozelyn Washington, “I’m pretty confident in our abilities. We’ve been practicing really hard and just preparing ourselves for the best. We continue to keep on. ”
The St. Joe boys, also starting their hoops playoffs in their home dome. The Flyers, ranked third in the TABC state private school 5A poll,. Head coach Michael Blank talked with our Sean Coffey on scheduling tougher games to avoid a repeat of last year’s first-round exit.
“This year, we scheduled a little bit heavier. We played in an Adidas shootout in Houston against Houston Christian and teams like that. Traveled to Converse Judson and played them. And took our lumps early, just to kind of show what it was we had to work on come this time around. So, hopefully that paid off for us and we’re looking forward to getting it on, on Tuesday. ”
St. Joe basketball will host a TAPPS 5A Area playoff doubleheader Tuesday night.
The Lady Flyers will play first against San Antonio Providence at 5:30.
Then the third ranked St. Joe boys take the court against Fort Bend Christian at 7:00. The Flyers won their district title with a perfect 8-0 record.
Another local hoops team that’s state-ranked and gets to host a playoff game, the Faith Academy boys. The Cougars, ranked fourth in the TABC private school 2A poll, went 8-0 in district for the first time in 16 years. I talked with two Cougars about their confidence level heading into post-season.
Said guard Avery Yates, “Wonderful. Everybody’s excited. We’re pushing and doing our thing basically. Just excitement really. ”
Said guard Jacob Hall, “I have a lot of confidence in my guys. I’ve had confidence in them since day one, since freshman year. We’re looking at finally making it happen this year. ”
Faith Academy basketball’s first playoff games, set for Tuesday night.
The Lady Cougars start the TAPPS 2A playoffs in the Area round against Bryan Allen Academy at 6:00 at Houston Emory Werner gym.
Faith Academy boys basketball gets to open the playoffs at home.
The Cougars face St. Gerard at 6:00 at the NextGen Gym.
