Generals Rained Out Wednesday & Thursday

Generals fans will have to wait longer to see their team at Riverside. Both Wednesday night’s and Thursday night’s games against the Texas Marshals have been rained out. The Generals are back in action Sunday at Texarkana. That’s where the Generals lost Tuesday night, 8-6.

Crossroads residents can now get free tickets to a Fourth of July collegiate league all-star baseball game sponsored by the University of Houston-Victoria.

The Texas Collegiate League All-Star Game will take place at Riverside Stadium inside Riverside Park. At 6:05 p.m., the league will hold a home run derby, and the game will begin at 7:05 p.m. Admission is free with an advance ticket. A limited number of free tickets are available on a first come, first served basis.

“UHV is excited to sponsor the All-Star Game,” UHV President Vic Morgan said. “Baseball is a popular sport, and we are glad to offer a free outing for community members to come out and watch America’s favorite pastime.”

Fans will receive UHV giveaways at the gate. They also can take part in games and contests between innings throughout the evening. Those who come wearing a UHV T-shirt will be entered into a drawing to win special prizes during the game. Because the game is taking place on the Fourth of July, patriotic music will be played at different times during the game, and one of the on-field games will be a hot dog eating contest. The national anthem will be sung by Cassie Cameron, a UHV senior double majoring in history and psychology.

The Victoria Generals play in the Texas Collegiate League, a collegiate summer wooden bat league consisting of five teams from Texas and Louisiana. This summer, UHV pitcher Jonathan Jimenez is playing for the Generals.

TCL players who excel during the first half of the season are selected for the All-Star Game. Last season, 11 Generals players were chosen as all-stars, and the players participating in this season’s game will be announced about four days prior to the game.

“This is a great opportunity for residents to see some great up-and-coming talent on the field,” said Mike Yokum, Victoria Generals vice president and manager. “The home run derby always is a fan favorite, and we’ll have some fun audience-participation games during the All-Star Game. It’s going to be a great night.”

Area residents can pick up tickets before July 4 at three locations in Victoria during regular business hours.

· Victoria Convention and Visitors Bureau, 702 N. Main St., Suite 101

· City of Victoria Public Information Office, 702 N. Main St., Suite 113

· UHV University Center, first floor kiosk, 3007 N. Ben Wilson St.

On Wednesday night, the Astros will give fans another chance to get their hands on a replica World Series ring. Every fan at the game tonight against the Tampa Bay Rays at Minute Maid Park will get a ring. The Astros originally gave replica rings to the first 10,000 fans who attended the team’s game against the Padres on April 6.
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) – The Detroit Tigers and Kansas City Royals will play a regular-season game in Omaha the week the 2019 College World Series opens, The Associated Press has learned.

Major League Baseball and the NCAA have been working to arrange a game as a kickoff event to the CWS, two people close to the situation told the AP on Wednesday on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss details.

A news conference with MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred was scheduled for Thursday at TD Ameritrade Park, the host site for the CWS.

The move would be similar to the regular-season games played in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, in conjunction with the Little League World Series.
