Freshmen help spark Jaguars to sweep of Saints

It may have been Senior Day for the University of Houston-Victoria Jaguars, but it was the freshmen who made sure the day would be successful.

Freshmen Kelsey Tidrick (FR/Port Lavaca, TX) and Emily Flores (FR/Houston, TX) came up big Saturday to help lead the Jaguars to a doubleheader sweep of the Our Lady of the Lake Saints in a Red River Athletic Conference matchup at the Victoria youth Sports complex.

Tidrick tossed a three-hit shutout in the opening game, a 2-0 victory, while Flores provided the walk-off walk that lifted the Jaguars to a 2-1 win in eight innings in Game 2.

The Jaguars improve to 31-17 on the year and 22-6 in conference with the wins, while OLLU falls to 22-20, 14-12 in RRAC.

Tedrick gave up singles in the third, fourth and seventh innings but never had a runner reach second base as she improved to 6-1 on the season. She also walked one and struck out three.

After threatening in the second and third innings, the Jaguars finally gave Tidrick all the run support she would need in the fifth inning.

Madeline Herrera (JR/Baytown, Texas) started the fifth with a bloop double to center and Jordan Hoefling (SO/Victoria, TX) followed with a single to left-center. After Gabby Davila (SO/Houston, TX) walked, Michelle Revels (SO/Corpus Christi, TX) grounded into a double play as Herrera scored for a 1-0 lead. Aubri Hockenbury (SR/Santa Fe, TX) followed with a single to center to score Hoefling.

The Saints grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning of game 2 and held the lead until the sixth.

Three consecutive singles by the Saints plated their lone run and that would be all the Saints would manage against Revels who went the distance and improved to 9-9.

Revel gave up three singles the rest of the way and only twice allowed a runner to reach second.

Revels also played a key role in her win driving home the tying run in the sixth. Davila singled to center and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jamie Macek (FR/Boling, TX). Revels then beat out an infield single and Davila raced all the way home from second.

Davila started the eighth inning rally with a double to left-center and Macek single to shallow center. After Revels walked to load the bases, Hockenbury grounded to short forcing Davila at second. Flores then drew the walk-off walk on a 3-1 count to finish off the win.

It was the last home game for seniors Hockenbury, Savannah Crittenden (SR/LaPorte, TX), Haley Beam (SR/Pearland, Texas) and Kathryn Wright (SR/Lindale, TX), who were recognized following the games along with their parents.
