Former World Boxing Champ In Victoria Saturday
Juarez Brings Team To Amateur Event
Victoria, Texas —
A major amateur boxing event in Victoria Saturday.
Tuff-E-Nuff Boxing Club Of Victoria, putting on the Glove Against Cancer tournament. It’s in honor of the wife of Tuff-E-Nuff head coach Jessie Martinez Sr. Regina Martinez, who beat cancer ten years ago. Up to 100 amateur boxers were competing, including four from Tuff-E-Nuff, Eric Acosta from Two Countries Boxing Club of Victoria, and from clubs from Houston, Palacios, Bay City, Beeville, Laredo, Weslaco, Edinburg, Ingleside, Corpus Christi, San Antonio, and Alice. Don talked with coach Martinez about the importance of this tournament for local boxing.
“It’s great. We’re keeping the sport alive and at the same time our own home town gets to see what we’ve been doing and that all the work is paying off. They get to see these kids are really working hard. “
At this event, Rocky’s Boxing Gym of Houston was competing. The owner and head coach of the gym is Rocky Juarez. He is a former WBC Super-Featherweight world champion, former WBO Featherweight Latinos champ, and he won three other major championships in his boxing career.
Now he is showing the young people at his gym the championship way to box, and Don asked Rocky how much it means to him to work with the young people at his gym.
Said Juarez, “It’s a great feeling to know the satisfaction that I get from these kids that come to the gym and show their dedication, motivation, discipline, going to the gym every day. I just know that it did good for me. Boxing saved my life. “
Joe Angel Martinez of Tuff-E-Nuff Boxing will compete at nationals next month in Oxnard, California.
