Former UHV professor gets prison sentence in drug case
HOUSTON (AP) – Prosecutors say a college professor who taught finance must serve a year in federal prison for helping a Houston-area synthetic marijuana ring transfer funds to Jordan.
Omar Al Nasser was sentenced Tuesday in Houston. The 37-year-old Al Naser, who was on the faculty at the University of Houston-Victoria, pleaded guilty in December to aiding and abetting an unlicensed money transmitting business.
Investigators say Al Naser’s plea deal involved more than $200,000 transferred from a U.S. bank.
The Houston Chronicle (http://bit.ly/2lmcrcR ) reports defense attorney Dick DeGuerin (dih-GEHR’-in) says Al Nasser did a favor for an acquaintance by wiring money once to Jordan without a license to do so.
Al Nasser was among 16 people arrested last year in the investigation. UH-Victoria officials last September put Al Nasser on leave without pay.
