A huge honor for a former East Titan.

HBU senior quarterback Bailey Zappe has been selected to the HERO Sports Preseason All-America Second Team, the online publication announced Thursday.

As a junior, Zappe completed 357-of-560 passes for 3,811 yards and 35 touchdowns, leading the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) in touchdowns, completions, attempts and ranking second in yards during the regular season. He was named the National Offensive Player of the Week, completing 43-of-59 passes for 498 yards and seven touchdowns against Texas Southern and completed 41-of-53 passes for 513 yards and five touchdowns in a 53-52 victory at South Dakota. Zappe earned Southland Conference Player of the Week in weeks three and five.

The Victoria, Texas, native ranks seventh in touchdowns and ninth in yards in Southland Conference single-season history. Zappe, who was a finalist for the Walter Payton Award, which honors the FCS’s top offensive player, holds virtually every school career, single-season and single-game passing record.

HBU is scheduled to open the season on the road against FBS and Conference USA foe North Texas Saturday, Sept. 5 at Apogee Stadium in Denton.
