Former East QB breaks 18-year-old record in win over Appalachian State

For the game, the former Victoria East quarterback throws for 422 yards and six touchdowns with no interceptions.

BOCA RATON, Florida — One week before Christmas, Bailey Zappe gets some early presents. His western Kentucky Hilltoppers win the Boca Raton Bowl over Appalachian State, 59-38.

For the game, the former Victoria East quarterback throws for 422 yards and six touchdowns with no interceptions. During the game, Bailey breaks two NCAA single season passing records. Zappe broke the 18-year old record set by B.J. Symons at Texas Tech for most passing yards in a season. Bailey finished with 5,967 yards, surpassing the previous record by 134 yards. Bailey broke the NCAA single season touchdown passing record with 62, breaking Joe Burrow of LSU’s record of 60 set two seasons ago. Bailey has one non-pro game left, the senior bowl in Mobile, Alabama in February. Not bad for someone who got just one college offer coming out of East.

Five of the six best NCAA single season yardage marks were set by former Texas high school quarterbacks: 1. Bailey Zappe, 2. B.J. Symons (Cypress Creek) 3. Graham Harrell (Ennis), tied for fourth, Joe Burrow & Case Keenum (Abilene Wylie), 6. Case Keenum.
