Former East Baseball Star Plans For First Pro Spring Training
Ortega To Join World Series Champions
Victoria, Texas —
A former VISD state finalist, getting set for his first pro baseball spring training..
Jonathan Ortega, drafted in the 19th round by the Red Sox last June after three seasons at Texas State. Ortega started out in the Red Sox short season minor league team at Lowell, Massachusetts, then got promoted for two weeks to their AAA team in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. The former two-time first team All-State pick as a Titan ended his first pro season back at Lowell. Ortega told me he played third, shortstop and second last season. I asked Jonathan how he feels about going to spring training with the reigning World Series champion Red Sox.
“I’m very excited. I’m anxious, I’ve been waiting around for six months just training, trying to get ready. It’s finally coming up so it’s exciting. Should be fun. There’ll be a lot of excitement around, a lot of people around because we won the World Series last year. It should be pretty cool.”
Jonathan Ortega leaves for his first pro baseball spring training March 3.
