REFUGIO, Texas –Five suspected undocumented immigrants are on the run after an attempted traffic stop on Monday.
Refugio County Sheriff’s Deputies attempted a traffic stop on a vehicle they deemed suspicious in Refugio.
The vehicle evaded authorities, maneuvering through Dairy Queen and Cantu’s Tire Shop parking lots, and a pursuit began.
The vehicle continued north onto Highway 183 toward Goliad. The vehicle proceeded north, but traveled in the southbound lane, accelerating at speeds of 90 miles per hour or more. The vehicle stopped briefly, and five male subjects exited the car and fled into the brush. The vehicle then continued driving north.
The vehicle was joined by DPS Troopers as it entered Goliad County. Deputies were able to force the vehicle off the highway, into a bar ditch, ultimately disabling the vehicle.
The driver exited the vehicle while it was still in motion and attempted to flee on foot. The driver was apprehended by Deputies and Troopers and taken into custody. The driver was also wanted on a parole warrant for Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon.
The other five subjects remain on the run. These subjects are believed to be undocumented persons being smuggled by the driver.
If you are a resident of this area and see anything suspicious, you are urged to contact the Refugio County Sheriff’s Office at (361) 526-2351.
