Fatal vehicle crash leaves two dead, one in hospital

18-year-old Joel Herrera Torres and 18-year-old Hector Javier Rios Jr. were both pronounced dead at 6:16 a.m.

YOAKUM, Texas – On November 22, at 4:30 a.m. a two-vehicle crash between a 2016 Hyundai Elantra and a 2021 1500 Dodge Ram truck left two dead and one in the hospital, 14.7 miles east of Yoakum.

DPS trooper San Miguel confirms 18-year-old Joel Herrera Torres and 18-year-old Javier Rios Jr. were traveling on Highway 111 towards Yoakum when the Hyundai crossed the center line and hit the truck traveling westbound head on. The reasoning behind the veering is still under investigation.

Both men were confirmed dead at 6:16 am by Justice of the Peace Hallie Hall.

The Dodge landed on its top while the Elantra rested at the borrow ditch facing south on its wheels. The driver of the truck, 51-year-old Roberto Garcia Mata Jr. of Smiley, was transported to DeTar hospital. He’s in stable condition.
