Family celebrates class of 2020 graduates quarantine style

VICTORIA, Texas- Across the nation, the class of 2020 graduates are facing the harsh reality of postponed graduations and festivities.

One Victoria family got creative to celebrate such milestone. They’re not only celebrating one, but two graduates, sisters Destiny Cano and Kierra Garcia. Garcia is finishing up high school at Victoria East and Cano is a senior at the University of Houston- Victoria.

“‘It’s definitely a bummer; not being able to finish senior year and I’m just glad that we get the education [through] online school… and we have the opportunity to do that,” says Garcia.

“Well graduation, that’s been postponed as well, so missing out on that… [I’m] upset, but I know that’s what needs to be done,” adds Cano.

Like for most parents, these achievements are also a reason to celebrate. This family decided to make a personalized banner; tall and wide in size, taking up part of their homes front yard. The idea was simply to acknowledge the achievement, in quarantine style.

“A lot of parents were decorating their front doors with like uniforms and stuff, so a way that I thought I’d do it, was with an actual banner. We can’t change the fact that they can’t go back to school, so better to keep their spirits lifted,” says Nikki Garcia, mother of both graduates.

Both sisters have plans to continue their education. Cano plans on attending classes to complete a dental hygienist program, while Garcia hopes to attend Victoria College next semester. Both senior graduates hope to see their classmates soon and celebrate.

When asked what message they’d share with those classmates, Kierra says, “I miss them, and keep pursuing what they want to do in their career, and everything will be ok, and good luck!” UHV senior, Destiny Cano adds that, “You may feel guilty for feeling this way, but know your feelings are still valid. We have to wait a little longer than expected, but I can’t wait to walk the stage with everyone.”
