Edna-Yoakum Football Playoff Preview

Area Rivals In Rematch

This weekend of area high school football playoffs, full of rematches.
Yoakum has blocked three punts this season. The Bulldogs’ most recent punt block was the biggest. Late in last Saturday night’s regional against Goliad, sophomore DeAndre Johnson blocked a punt and recovered it in the end zone to lift the Bulldogs to the three-point win.

Head coach Bo Robinson told me this is the latest sign of the heart of his team. “Kids just never quit, they never give up. They play hard. It’s not the most talented bunch but they’ll give you everything they have. They prove people wrong every week.”

Edna will get the chance to avenge its only loss of the season. Edna’s defense, allowing just over eight points per game. Last week the Cowboys overcame a slow start to dominate Rice Consolidated in the regional round. Kenny Haynes scored three touchdowns and went over the 2000 rushing yard mark for the season.

Head coach Jerry Long told me that fits the cowboys’ philosophy: Control the clock, shorten the game. “That’s our philoosophy, number one. It allows our defense to rest. Number two, it keeps their talented athletes on the sideline. As long as we keep the ball, they don’t have it.”

One of the top high school football playoff matchups in the state involves two area teams..
The 3A Division I state quarterfinal between Edna and Yoakum, Saturday afternoon at 2:00. The game will be played at Jim Wacker stadium at Texas State. The Bulldogs beat the Cowboys at home by four on October 26.
