Edinburg woman arrested on Smuggling of Persons charge

A traffic stop led to the discovery of four individuals hidden inside vehicle

WHARTON COUNTY, Texas – On Tuesday, at approximately 1:30 p.m., a member of the Wharton County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Interdiction Unit conducted a traffic stop. The official stopped a 2018 Dodge Journey for a traffic violation on U.S. 59, in the area of Mikeska’s BBQ.

The member identified the driver as Mayra Mendoza, 35, of Edinburg, Texas. The official observed several indicators of criminal activity during the course of the traffic stop.

After further investigation, the member discovered four Hispanic individuals hidden inside the vehicle. Officials discovered the driver was transporting the individuals from the Rio Grande Valley to the Houston area.

Three of the individuals were from Honduras, and one individual was from El Salvador. Law enforcement contacted the U.S. Border Patrol and verified that the four individuals had entered the U.S. illegally.

Officials arrested Mendoza for Smuggling of Persons, a third-degree felony. They also turned over the four individuals to the U.S. Border Patrol.

The Texas Department of Public Safety assisted with this traffic stop.
