East, West Volleyball Continue District Play

For the first time this season, there was district volleyball action in both VISD gyms.

First up on Tuesday was West, going up against Calhoun as they looked to stay unbeaten in district play. After a sluggish start to the first set, the Warriors charged back in front of their home crowd to take the opener 25-22. Alysia Hill’s team kept rolling from that point on, winning the second frame 25-20 before blowing out the Sandcrabs, 25-7 to complete the three-set sweep.

Lexi Morris had 6 kills to lead the Warriors in the victory, while Kia Willborn had 6 aces and added 15 assists. Morris added 11 digs to help fill up her stat sheet.

Across town, East took on Veterans Memorial as they tried to pull their district record even at 2-2. The Titans came out on the court strong, taking the first set 25-23 behind some big time playmaking from Leilani Wimbish-Gay. They would proceed to win the second, 25-21, to take a commanding two set lead but seemed to hit a wall after that as Veterans ran the table from that point forward to pull off the comeback victory. The Eagles won the third, 25-19 before breezing through the fourth, 25-10. They won the final frame by a score of 15-10 to complete the three set comeback.

Wimbish-Gay had a huge game for the Titans, recording 13 kills and 31 digs on the evening. Abby Barnett added nine kills and Loren Escalona had 16 assists.

East fell to 1-3 in district with the defeat. They’ll continue district play this Friday in Corpus when they travel to take on Moody, while West will continue their in-district schedule against Ray the same night.
