East-West Girls Soccer Preview

Titans, Warriors In Top Three In District

There will be VISD sports showdowns at Memorial Stadium Tuesday night.

There will be soccer duels. The East girls improved to 6-1 in district after beating King last Friday night. The Titan girls are right now in second place in district. Two East girls told me how well they are doing at this stage.

Said center back Madisen Gay, “We feel really good about where we are right now. Just being in second place motivates us even more to keep going and pushing harder. ”

Said center attacking midfielder Kirsten Ysaguirre, “This year we’ve definitely improved on our passing. Last year we were new in the formation and we were still getting used to it. We definitely have improved on our combo play and the passing this year.”

West girls soccer, nipping at East’s heels in the district race. The Warrior girls are in third, just two points behind the Titan girls. The West girls won 5-0 in Corpus Christi over Moody last Friday night to up their district record to 4-2-1. Two Warrior girls told our Sean Coffey about the current quality of their team’s play.

Said sophomore Anneliese Covarrubias, “As a team, I think we’re doing well in the defensive region. We’re a really good defensive team. We have good passing and communicating throughout the field.”

Said junior Vanessa Oubre, “We’ve been really good lately about moving the ball around and communicating. And our chemistry’s really there, and we’ve gotten a lot better at taking shots on goal and things like that, so really good.”

West hosts East in boys and girls soccer Tuesday night at Memorial Stadium. Girls game first at 6:00.
