East, West football begin preseason practice

Victoria ISD high school football started preseason workouts Monday morning.

East has four offensive starters, five defensive starters and 17 lettermen returning from the first East football team to make the state quarterfinals. The Titans are returning their top running back, Brandon Tumlinson, who rushed for more than 1,300 yards and 15 touchdowns last season. The Titans had 29 Varsity players from last year graduate, so they are looking to fill key positions, including quarterback. East’s first scrimmage is at Memorial Stadium on Friday, August 18, against Bay City.

West football also began preseason workouts on Monday. The Warriors didn’t make the playoffs last year, but they won 30 games from 2013-2015, so they have tradition to draw on. West returns five offensive and four defensive starters from last year’s team that almost made the playoffs. They have some talented play-makers, including running back Chayce Grevey, who rushed for just over one thousand yards and eight touchdowns last season. Quarterback Jordan Fillmore returns after starting the final six games last season. West’s first scrimmage is Friday, August 25, against Corpus Christi King at Buccaneer Stadium.
