East Volleyball Kicks Off 2018 Season
With the beginning of classes just days away, East volleyball officially got their 2018 season underway with their first practice Friday morning. The practice was followed by a scrimmage against volleyball alumni at the East gym later in the day.
As they continue to prepare for their move to district 30 — a district with more Corpus opponents — the Titans will be aided by the return of seven varsity players, and five seniors. Among the top players back are District Blocker of the Year Leilani Wimbish-Gay, second team All-District pick Zakari Perry, and Abby Barnett, who received an All-District honorable mention a year ago.
“We’re very excited,” said Titans head coach Misty Boenig following the practice. “The energy that these young ladies walked into the gym with this morning told me everything I need to know about this season. They’re ready to go, they’re excited for volleyball, and really excited about the new team and new district, everything that’s coming up.”
Boenig is entering her third season at the helm for East, which is looking for its first playoff appearance since 2014. While the Titans struggled at times last season, posting a 10-19 overall record with a 3-10 mark in-district, Boenig believes the team’s high number of returning players and collective experience will help them greatly down the road.
“We’ve got a lot of leadership on the team, we’ve got a lot of people with that extra experience that we need in order to show our new players exactly what it is to be tight in volleyball,” said Boenig.
The Titans will officially begin their season on Tuesday with a home contest against Floresville/Edna. The match is slated to start at 7 pm at the VEHS gym.
