Final games before UIL suspension played at Riverside

East and West both played at Riverside Saturday

VICTORIA, Texas — The final VISD athletics events until at least March 29th took place at Riverside Stadium Saturday morning, after the UIL announced the suspension of games effective Monday as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

Saturday marked the final day of action at the 51st annual VISD Baseball Tournament. East played Tuloso-Midway in the fifth place game at 8:00 am, while West and Yoakum were scheduled to play for third place at 10:15 before VISD athletics director Bobby Jack Wright asked the Bulldogs not to attend. That decision came after news broke Friday that an infected individual had originally sought treatment at Yoakum Community Hospital.

“I just felt like there was no need to take any unnecessary risk, or any unnecessary chances any further with the developments that have transpired over the last 48 hours,” Wright said of his decision on Saturday.

East lost to T-M in the early game, 7-2, then opted to play rival West in a City Championship scrimmage at 10:15. The Titans would defeat the Warriors, 9-2 in five innings in their scrimmage.
