East baseball moves into first place tie with victory over Vets

East baseball’s win Monday night was big on multiple levels.

After an up and down weekeend at the 50th Annual VISD Tournament, the Titans were hungry for a district win, getting just that against Veterans Memorial at Riverside. Monday’s victory against the Eagles — ranked second in the Texas H.S. Baseball Coaches Association 5A Poll — also vaulted the Titans into a tie for first place in district at 2-1.

“It’s huge,” head coach Wes Kolle said Tuesday. “We try not to make it bigger than it is. We always say that the biggest game of the year is the next game on the schedule.”

Jacob Martinez went the distance in the winning effort, twirling a two-hit, seven strikeout complete game for East. A three-run fourth inning proved to be the difference, as the Titans took a lead they would never relinquish.

“We needed that last night just because we’ve been riding such a big roller coaster so far this season, up and down,” said Kolle.

East baseball continues district play on the road in Corpus Wednesday afternoon, when they take on Moody at noon.
