East and West Volleyball Gear Up for District Play

With more than two weeks of the season already behind them, both East and West volleyball will begin district play this week. West will host Carroll tomorrow evening at 6 in the West Gymnasium while East will travel to Port Lavaca to take on Calhoun. Both teams are fresh off recent tournaments, with the Warriors playing in the Bastrop tournament this past weekend and the Titans returning from the Jaguar Tournament in Floresville.

“I’m very pleased at our performance, especially this last weekend at our tournament,” said Titans head coach Misty Boenig at the team’s practice Monday. “We’re running an offense that looks really nice, and defensively it’s all starting to come together. I’m very proud of the progress that we’ve made.”

Boenig’s team has enjoyed a nice start to the 2018 season, posting a 9-6 mark through the team’s first 15 games including a 5-1 showing over the weekend. Those results in Floresville were good enough to earn the team 2nd place overall at the Jaguar tournament.

“I think our energy level was really high in the first games, towards the end it kind of simmered down,” said Titans senior Loren Escalona. “We were tired. But I think communication and just working together and trusting (helped us).”

West, meanwhile, has been solid as well, with an eye towards continued improvement as they get set to begin district play.

“The tournaments have helped us prepare a lot, and we’re able to figure out where everyone fits in in the tournaments,” said Warriors junior Piper Kallman. “(We’re) on the court working together, working as a unit and it’s all coming together.”

West went 3-5 over the weekend in Bastrop, with wins over Stony Point, London, and Crockett. The team’s record sits at 8-11 overall through the season’s first two weeks.
