A 2000 Oldsmobile passenger car was traveling south on US 77 in the construction zone over the Guadalupe River bridge, and a 2017 Ford pickup was traveling north on US 77. For unknown reasons, the Oldsmobile drifted to the right and struck the concrete barrier. The driver of the Oldsmobile, Nathaniel Witte, 22, of Victoria died at the scene. The driver of the truck, Kyle Riddle, 32, of Victoria was uninjured. The investigation is ongoing and it’s not yet known if speed, distracted driving, or another factor along with the wet, rainy conditions contributed to the the driver of the Oldsmobile losing control of the vehicle. The Department of Public Safety would like to remind all drivers to be extra careful when driving in adverse weather, drive at a safe speed, minimize distractions and always wear your safety belt.
