Donate to help 8-month-old Emery receive open heart surgery

Emery Guerrero is an 8-month-old toddler who was diagnosed with two heart defects now she’s in a San Antonio hospital waiting to have open-heart surgery.

Courtney Whitehead the Mother of Emery Guerrero said, “Unfortunately, right now their not able to do surgery because she’s still not well enough to undergo the bypass, cause they fear she might not be able to come out of it. They said once she clears up from her RSV that they will be able to do her open heart surgery here”.

RSV stands for Respiratory Syncytial Virus and it affects most children before the age of 2 years old. It generally causes cold-like symptoms but for those with weak immune systems. RSV can lead to life-threatening diseases such as pneumonia or bronchiolitis and inflammation of the lungs, making it hard for the child to breath.

“Right now she’s on two different respiratory machines. One that helps her with a high flow that kind of expands her lungs and one of course for her oxygen” said Whitehead.

Whitehead said the medication that would help Emery’s heart isn’t covered by insurance but the doctors are searching for a generic brand that would be affordable for the family. We asked Whitehead, how much would it cost for the doctors to perform Emery’s open-heart surgery?

“I’m not for sure an exact amount but from the numbers that me and her dad were pulling up it was around 9k just to get it, I guess covered so she can do her surgery,” said Whitehead.
