DeWitt Co. Jailer Arrested After Stealing A Debit Card
A jailer in Dewitt County was taken into custody on Wednesday, February 8th after an investigation revealed he stole a debit card from a former inmate.
According to the DeWitt County Sheriff’s Office, Sergeant Gregory Escobedo took the card and used it at two different locations in Cuero.
During a meeting with Cuero Chief of Police Jay Lewis, Sheriff Carl Bowen was informed during the investigation of a theft of a debit card report, they discovered that the suspect was a DeWitt County jailer.
Escobedo was taken into custody by Texas Rangers and charged with one count of credit card/debit card abuse and Tampering with government records.
He was booked into the DeWitt County Jail where he was arraigned and transferred to the Lavaca County Jail where he posted bond.
The DeWitt County Sheriff’s Office released a statement saying, “He was placed in a position of trust and he betrayed it.”
The current investigation is ongoing.
