Newscenter25 has learned Chief Executive Officer Gary Malaer has stepped down from his role with DeTar Healthcare System effective April 3, 2020.

Malaer has served as CEO of the hospital since January 2018.

A spokesperson released this statement:

“We would like to thank Gary for his commitment to our goal of providing the best patient care possible. During his tenure, Malaer has focused on expanding access to care in the Crossroads community, overseeing the expansion of the ICU and implementation of a Tele-Neurology Program. Through these initiatives, more people are receiving quality care close to home.”

“It has been a privilege to work alongside the team at DeTar Healthcare System–the skilled medical staff, dedicated employees, selfless volunteers, and excellent administrative team–to advance the care provided for patients,”  Malaer said.

A search to identify a new CEO will begin immediately. Members of the board, medical staff and administration will participate in the search to select the right candidate to lead the hospital, the statement said.

During the transition, Bernard Leger will serve as the Interim CEO, sustaining the hospital’s COVID-19 preparedness and response activities. Leger has more than 25 years’ experience as a healthcare professional who brings a broad range of skills acquired through his leadership positions in a variety of healthcare settings.
