Cuero, Yoakum Football Coaches Talk State Semifinals

Both Play State Semis Friday Night

In just over 24 hours, two high school football teams from DeWitt County will play in the state semifinals.

Cuero continued its rampage of the 4A Division II playoffs last Saturday. The Mean Green jumped out to a 48-0 lead over Navarro before winning its state quarterfinal. I asked head coach Travis Reeve what the feeling is in the Gobbler Capital Of The World about their going to the state semis.

“Our kids are just extremely excited about the opportunity that we have and where we are in this playoff run right now. Our community’s really excited about it as well. This is a football town and our fans and our kids get real excited this time of year. It’s a lot of fun.”

Cuero football, on to the 4A Division II State semifinals for the first time in three years. They will take on Silsbee.
That state semi will be Friday night, 7:30, at Legacy Stadium in Katy. Cuero will be visitors.

Yoakum football, back in familiar territory, in the state semifinals. The Bulldogs beat district rival Edna by 36 points in the 3A Division I state quarterfinal, outscoring the Cowboys 21-0 in the second half. Head coach Bo Robinson talked with our Sean Coffey about his team’s confidence and mentality going into the rematch with the Cowboys.

“Part of it is what they do offensively. We match up good against that. But the kids were ready to play. They bought in to what we planned that week and they executed the plan and just played really hard.”

Yoakum is heading to the state 3A Division I semifinals for the third straight year.
The Bulldogs face Grandview Friday night at 7:00 at the Pfield in Pflugerville.
