Cuero goes up against Geronimo-Navarro Panthers in the 4A-Division II state quarterfinals

The Geronimo-Navarro Panthers have had the Cuero Gobbler’s number the past two seasons.

In 2020, the Panthers defeated the Gobblers in the opening round of the playoffs by a field goal, 31-28. Fast forward to this season and coming off impressive wins early in the season against No. 8 Wimberley Texans and Yoakum Bulldogs, the Gobblers were stunned yet again by the Panthers losing to a last-second field goal, 29-27.

And now, the stakes are bigger than ever for these two teams with a chance of making it to the state semi-finals.

The Gobblers (12-1) haven’t lost a game since losing to the Panthers and winning a district title for the first time since 2018. The Gobblers faced San Antonio-Young Men’s Leadership Academy in the first round beating the Lions, 62-7. In the second round, the Gobbler’s shut down Rockport-Fulton’s offense to beat the Pirates, 55-27.  In the regional semifinals, the Gobblers defeated the Texans again, 36-26, to advance to the regional final.

The Panthers (10-2) dropped its first game of the season against the Calhoun Sandcrabs before winning five straight before losing to Wimberley Texans, 27-0, and finishing second in District 14-4A Division II. The Panthers defeated the Smithville Tigers and Port Isabel Silver Tarpons in the first two rounds. The Panthers in the third round defeated No. 8 Sinton Pirates in overtime, 29-28, after going for the two-point conversion.

The last two times these teams have played have been decided by three points are less. So look forward this game to being one of the best in the area and state this weekend.

The kickoff is at 7:30 p.m. in Bastrop’s Memorial Stadium and the winner of this game will play the winner of the No. 4 West Orange-Stark Mustangs and No. 5 China Spring Cougars matchup.
