Gobblers Go For Fourth State Title

Cuero football, going for its fourth state football title Friday. The Gobblers taking on Texarkana Pleasant Grove, the defending state 4A Division II champs. Pleasant Grove scores first on a 12-yard TD run by Bruce Garrett for a 7-0 first quarter lead. The Gobblers answer quickly. On their first play from scrimmage, Jordan Whittington runs 69 yards for the touchdown to tie the game at 7-7. Garrett would score his second TD of the game from five yards out to put Pleasant Grove ahead in the second quarter, 14-7. Garrett adds another touchdown from 69 yards out for a 21-7 Pleasant Grove lead. Whittington answers with a 54-yard touchdown, running with it after getting a direct snap, cutting the Pleasant Grove lead to 21-14 in the second quarter. Late in the first half, after a Michael Barta to Whittington touchdown pass was reversed on instant replay, Barta went back to Whittington on the next play for a 26-yard touchdown pass. The extra point was missed, so Cuero is losing, 21-20, at halftime. After a scoreless third, Whittington gets his fourth touchdown of the day on a one-yard run. Cuero takes a 26-21 lead after the two-point conversion fails. Later in the fourth, Whittington picks up his fifth touchdown of the game, on a 12-yard run. Gobblers up 33-21. Ben Harmon scores for the Hawks to cut the Cuero lead to 33-28. But Whittington scores his sixth touchdown of the game from 20 yards out.
