Cuero Football Picked No. 4 In State

Gobblers Are Defending State Champs

Two months away from pre-season high school football workouts, and one area team makes a state top five.
Cuero football, picked fourth Friday in Dave Campbell’s Texas Football Magazine pre-season 4A Division II state poll. That’s despite losing 29 seniors and 14 starters from their state championship team last December. Included in that number, state 4A Offensive Player Of The Year and Max Preps All-America Jordan Whittington. Cuero football head coach Travis Reeve, telling me they will have to work hard to live up to that ranking. The team ranked number one in that poll, Texarkana Pleasant Grove, the team the Gobblers beat to win state at Jerry World.

Cuero, hosting a 7-on-7 state qualifying tournament. All the action starts at 8:10 Saturday morning, with the state qualifying tournament title game at noon. The Gobblers will be in Pool A with El Campo, Ingleside and Navarro. In Pool B are Gonzales, Jourdanton, Smithville and West Oso. Coach Reeve tells me the Mean Green will be wearing the soft shell protective helmets. The state 7-on-7 tournament starts June 27 at Veterans Park And Athletic Complex in College Station.
