Cuero Football Gets New Head Coach
Alvarez Approved By Cuero ISD Board
Cuero football has a new head coach.
The Cuero ISD board, voting 6-0, with one board member absent, Thursday night to hire Jack Alvarez, football head coach at Copperas Cove. Alvarez led Copperas Cove to the bi-district playoffs two years ago. Before that, Alvarez led Ennis to three state championship appearances and a 5A Division II state title in 2014.
Alvarez succeeds Travis Reeve, who took the football head coaching job at New Caney on January 30. Reeve coached the Gobblers to the 4A Division II state championship in 2018. In his eight seasons as Cuero head coach, Reeve led the Mean Green to seven playoff appearances, four district championships, four trips to the state quarterfinals and two trips to the state semis. Coach Reeve told me Thursday when he told the Mean Green players he was leaving, it was the toughest thing he’s had to do in his career.
“It’s tough leaving here. We have family here, a lot of friends here. We’ve been here for 14 years. Two of my three kids have graduated from Cuero high school. It’s a special place, always has been, always will be. Lot of great memories here. I had a chance to work with a lot of great coaches and players, and to be a part of a fabulous community. ”
Coach Reeve told me that going with him from Cuero to New Caney will be offensive coordinator Jordan Hataway and defensive coordinator Zach Linscomb.
